His live performances are a mix of heady minimalist dubs and spontaneous compositions, further blurring the lines between DJ, musician, and artist.

Its been an interesting summer so far for Dubstep and Bass music in general. There must be 10times the amount of producers and djs playing and making Dubstep music worldwide and in the USA it seems the entire country is at it. The harder sound has caught on big time. We already knew this was the case last year. Now its everywhere. Beaport charts are showing a steady combination of heavy heavy midrange monster tunes the occasional deeper track and new releases by the classic Dubstep Dons from the UK. Bigger festivals are awash with mosh pits to Dubstep. Dubstep goons are everywhere armed with Ableton, bad you tube rips, bootleg tunes and Beatport top 100 purchases. Wheres the Dub?

This summer in San Francisco the dances have so many new faces younger kids and younger crowds and the hard sound is running the show. New weeklies are allowing anyone to be able to go out to dance to "Dubstep" everyday of the week period. All these events are all showcasing the filth and fury of the newer sounds. Older promoters like Redline, Soundpieces, Surefire, Big Up and my own Brap Dem! are still throwing the occasional big show and monthlies with great headliner talent from all over but with diverse fromats. Crowds have been thin and fickle this summer and it seems a bit less attended then last summer for sure.

I personally still play Dubstep and get tons of fresh tunes but have to dig for better tunes. I am also pushing deeper and also slower bpms. I am just really feeling different sounds right now. the music is bathed in funky ghostly deeper minimal bass laden riddims with house elements and also north of 150 bpm oddness that has really caught my ear.

Right now San Francisco has a few great alternatives to straight all Dubstep nights. I personally will never do an all Dubstep event unless there is good reason to and the present and future is all about all formats in my opinion. Below I've listed the events that I have been attending this summer for my post Dubstep hangover that are worth checking out. Not to say there aren't any good all Dubstep events there are tons (check this Facbook group) but not everyone is looking for a bassface each and every time they go out:

ICEE HOT - a monthly at 222 Hyde in Sf that showcases 2-step, funky, garage, house, bass, tropical, future, and great pizza. Residents are Ghosts on Tape, Low Limit, Disco Shawn, Rollie Fingers.

CHANGE THE BEAT - a weekly party at SOM bar in the Mission. Great diverse local and international talent playing Beat, Glitchy, Lazery, Hiphop, Future bass, Funky, Dubstep and other hip-Hop bass driven music. Residents are Dials, Salva, Centipede.

SOUNDPEICES - any party this crew throws is fire period. The Crew of Sparkuhl, Dials, Bogl and Sarah really do a kick ass job of presenting something fresh and new each and every time.

Of course my own Surefire Sound we have moved to a Bi-Monthly format starting in August with Scuba.

Dubstep like D&B will never die it will continue to mutate and whatever event and environment it is played in will always be receptive to it. The one thing this summer that reminded me what I love about Dubstep is the new DMZ LP. This lp has been on repeat next to my bed almost nightly programming me with serene waves of good dub and bass and the title Return to Space is so crucial.

Tune of the Week 02-06-10: XI - SUPER WHATEVER

XI is straight murking it on the release tip right now. With new tunes finally out on Immerse Recordings, Formant Recordings and forthcoming on Surefire Sound, 2010 will be a big year for new XI material.

Recently on the Loetech Sub FM Radio show XI has been showing off his new tunes. I'll save the Bombaman rant for another post (because he is killing it as well!!). The tune that caught my ear and I can't get out of head this week is an odd one called SUPER WHATEVER. Check the XI My Space first track in the player. The track falls somewhere in the deeper, dark-tech , dubstep vibe. It swings and gltiches out but holds a steady beat that keeps the groove good and even happy. Speed up strings and odd guitar elements add to the atmospherics. Don't know when it will come out. This tune can be found in VIP form on Alex Incyde's new DUB WAR Podcast.

A bit of a departure from RSD's ususal Dub soaked style, non the less it brings the steady boom.

Bold moves by community minded music lovers, does good. The first Cali Dubstep Republic fundraiser was great! So many new faces. Smiling dancing enjoyment conversation. The sound was spot on for many of the sets. I had a personal breakthrough by using my new Eee Asus netbook to dj with Serato. It worked out well. I had a blast seeing everybody in the SF Dusbtep/Blap/Lazer/Bass scene work together to raise money for the first Dubstep float in a local parade. I'm just just gonna say that the ideas are big, hopes are high, and the sound will be the banging. Great sets from Mercedes (Subwize- SC), True Force, DJG, and I'm sure the rest wowed the crowd. I swear every time I go out to play or play I always see lots of new faces. More fundraisers are coming up so keep your eyes on Groundscore.net or Dubstep Forum for details. They will be going on all summer long, with great local and out of town talent. It stands to be a great few months of real effort and music.

My Lost Lappy inspires rants on Serato

Its' been a ruff few weeks. I lost my laptop. It was stolen by 2 kids in Oakland at the bus stop as I was putting it away in my backpack. I chased the kids down and got one and turned him over to the police. I still have no laptop. What did I lose? Music. My tracks I was eager to finish up in Ableton and about 5 months of dubs from all over the world. The day before this all went down I backed up my laptop and did not save the dubs because I wanted to sort them and file them in an organized manner. Silly me. I posted up on Dubstep forum and I received an outpouring of tunes from all over. I had to use cds the last time I played Grime City and it was ok. I do miss my Serato and Ableton.

How a DJ plays music has been a hot topic locally for sometime. Some people think that using Serato is not real djing. One needs to use records or cut plates because its better. It's a tired debate which really is pointless. If you have ever seen Plastician play he fucking kills it using Serato. He deftly plays tunes like a tie fighter pilot swaying and moving going in for the dance floor kill. Its awesome. Serato has made me a faster more focused DJ. I see wave forms and hear phrases and my mind and body sync and I can play tunes in more creative ways. My sets pack more of a wallop. No more going into the record bag to fish for tunes. No more confusion on white labels. Heck no more cuts and dry finger tips from handling all those record sleeves. I buy the record I rip it it goes into the laptop and for once in my life I don't wear out a record and it has a good long life on the shelf.

After about 18 years of djing I've learned to choose my weapon and use it wisely. Damn do I miss my laptop!

Been a long week recovering from Miami. The days went on and on with sun, drinks, food and music. Lots of new faces, meeting people, talking, talking. Got to visit family too, total solid trip, worth every bit of effort. Big up LA Gang, UK famo, Kush Aurora, Kozee and big shout to Hera, you are an amazing travel buddy as always! Great to hear SUREFIRE has a solid rep worldwide. It was wonderful to hear people ask and talk about all that is SUREFIRE. Aside from losing our banner to a thief the night of our showcase and before London Bass in Miami, all went well. Thanks to all those that made it out and played!

Falling Into the End of The Year

What can I say. The worm has turned here in the states. Obama is now president elect. Everyone I talk to feels like a weight has been lifted. Going to work in the morning feels like the its all a bit more worth it now. Is Obama going to wave his magic hope wand and sort us all out? The rich, the poor, the destitute, the crackheads on 6th street? Who knows but at least we are giving him the benefit of the doubt. As for music it just don't stop.

Heading into the end of the year there are still tons of tunes coming out. Recently I have been asked to buy tunes for Tweekin Records SF. Tweekin is a small shop run by various local DJs at one point in time, now run by DJ M3. Now it has expanded its selection to include Dubstep, Techno, Rock, Indie and its staple House.Every Sunday before the Simpsons after my Sunday nap, I pour over preorder sheets from the last few dance record distributors in the America. Many have gone broke and disappeared. Ordering stuff is hard. One has to consider all flavors of Dubstep. How much of each copy. Whats hot whats not. Knowing the music as I do is key. I am buying for the city that has so many choices. I am trying to get the word out as much as I can via message boards and My Space. I am into the second week if ordering and I haven't even had time to go to the store and see the section yet.

Between DJing, event planning a spot of writing and now buying. I got my hands full 'till the end of the year. Filled with hope I think its going to be ok.

BIG UP MAG

Some friends have started BIG UP magazine. A magazine dedicated to Art, music and revolutionary ideas. I contributed to the first issue. Friday they will be holding a shared launch party with Full Melt in celebration of issue 1 and the Bay Area Dubstep Volume 2 compilation. The party looks massive all artist on the BAD 2 comp playing. Curious as to what BIG UP was all about I asked them.

GET BUSY TIME

Precious little grains of sand how you mock me in the hour glass of my musical life!

This month got started off with a bang with 2 musical landmarks. First Friday September 5th in SF was GET FREAKY. A place for all the Burning Man crazies to decompress and shake the dust off. FULL MELT hosted the Dubstep room with Ripple, Antiserum, Boxcutter, Distance and Milanese. Packed house, even Vaccine trekked from her lab to see the show. and great sets. Boxcutter was playing live and went from style to style with the flick of a wrist. Got to meet our brother in Surefire Europe, super bass agent Paul Foweler who came to get a taste of SF and LA. Got to Kozees at 5:30am blinked and I was off to SFO to go to L.A. for SMOG 2 year. Dubstep in the U.S. has come a long way. Epic party! Great to see Cyrus Random Trio and Plastician. Awesome to see the Los Angeles gang doing it up big. Cyrus played a fantastic set. His sound has evolved and his production has gotten even sicker! Tons of new tunes and his collaborations with Distance have been very enjoyable. Big bass nastiness the entire night here is a link to pics.

Last weekend it was a triple threat of events. First up Make Out Sessions at Matador with a smashing Dubstep and DNB lineup. DJG was playing with Oneman from the UK at 222 Hyde. Oneman played swing filled ill 2 step and Dubstep. I was stoked to finally hear this cat live and it was banging. Small crowd but people were getting down. Finally the night ended with Tino Corp and 6Blocc playing at Air Cartoons a record release party for rapper Azeehm. The party had a weird vibe and most people were packed in the breaks room were I even heard an obviously booted copy of Eastern Jam playing in the distance. Recently that tune has been circulating in many hands and honestly its a shame. I know peeps haven't ripped it from promo so who knows how it got out. I was more saddened by seeing Tino play to an almost empty room and 6 Blocc play to a few more heads. I paid full price to get into Air Cartoons and man I'm just glad my money went to Tino and 6. Big up the crazy burner hippy chick who was displaying her bear cinnamon ring (read arse hole) under the skirt to shocked on lookers and bad bwoy DNB DJ Rob Cannon for the safe ride home.

CURRENT 12 INCH FAVE:
Sub Soca by Chef and Monkey Style by Cluekid. Great diverse 2 tracker on the new Subbalicious label on sweet pink bubble gum colored wax. Sub Soca is fierce sopshiticated African house feeling tune that has a nice bassline I can't wait to play on a system. Big up Chefal! Monkey Style is a jungle classic in disguise. Cluekid apes his best pre '98 rolling slow mo jungle and its refreshing to hear. Go cop it!

PROMO HUNT EASTERN JAM MADNESS

Dubs, promos, white labels, the staple of any hard working DJ or collector. In active dance music circles the freshest tunes get the crowd going. Some tunes are so big it creates a frenzy months before its even slated for release.

Eastern Jam by Chase and Status is a big tune that came out of nowhere. It will be a big release and has made me do the Donkey Kong on the dance floor. You talk to a head who has heard it played live and they get this look in their eye like "oh yea that ones a fucking monster". I first heard Eastern Jam on a Youngsta show hosted by Toasty on Rinse. Yunx played Eastern Jam and another untitled Chase and Status tune that has 5th Element Sci-Fi like sounds in it. I heard he was handed the CD at FWD and played it to a shocked crowd. Both are big and sinister. I got pretty obsessed with those tunes and hoped to find out when they would come out. D&B producers like Chase and Status are making some great tunes. Benny Page - Step Out is another tune I heard and had a heart attack over. I was hella surprised when I found out it was Benny. Purist, bed room dwelling, Oxy Teens complain about D&B producers take on Dubstep. I think a good tune is good tune from Caspa to Dusk and Blackdown to fucking Kenny Rogers. Don't care who made it, if it bangs then bring it.

As far as promos go Eastern Jam hit promo sometime last month and it kind of came out real sneaky like. On the Dubstep Forum one record shop found a copy and will give it away this weekend at random. I missed the promo window but I figured it could be hunted down. Its coming out on RAM a D&B label and maybe it landed in some shops under D&B instead of Dubstep. Discogs has sellers letting it go for 40-50 US sans shipping. People are going ape shit over this promo. How much is too much for a promo? If a DJ has gigs coming up white label promos are a must. If you are a collector maybe the full art work promos are better. Over the weekend I realized that all the Argon releases I have are promos on colored labels and the full art copies have well, full art on the label and sleeve. Dubstep forum is filled with pre order of white labels at small shops or on Ebay months before they come out. Once you buy a white label you can rock it at a rave or play N-Type in your bedroom for your friends but at least you loved (obsessed about/overbid on) the tune enough to get it. A bit of my wages go to 2 important things, the tax man and the record shop. I got my copy of Eastern Jam at a retail price online. I found it bought it and then went back to make sure i got it and it was sold out. I wigged but then got the order confirm and yesterday I got the shipping notice. Soon I will rinse it the fuck out until people get sick of seeing me do the Donkey Kong. MUHAHAHAHHAHA!!!!!

DUBS BBQ METAL

This weekend had epic music moments. Between the OSC BBQ and Judas Priest and Motorhead at Shoreline, I couldnt stop having fun.

The OSC Hote l hosted a sick BBQ and with a live feed on Dubstep FM. Line up was Roommate, Antiserum, Lexxus, Dubsworth, Ultraviolet, Djunya, Rastatronics, myself, Blackheart, and J Suave on the mic duties. Heaps of meat and cooler after cooler of Tecate and Red Stripe and bottles of Vodka, fantastic Bean Soup with fresh hand made tortillas (gracias Miro and Jazz) and grilled pineapple with Nutella and cream cheese and more meat all backed by big bass beats pouring out of Roommates studio. Highlights of the day included hearing Dreadlock by Subscape and a sick new Antiserum and Dubsworth track which was metal mashing mad! Everyone had a good time and such a funny DJ mashup; whos going next....I played 3 then he played 3 then who played 2 or you haven't played, its pure mayhem. We also got to welcome Distance to SF in nice Nor-Cali style BBQ. He plays the Get Freaky Afterburn with Ripple, Boxcutter and Milanese and many more this Friday. Most everyone who is on the new Bay Area Dubstep 2 compilation was in the house. Just released on MP3 and coming up on CD and wax the comp contains track after track of deep vibe filled Bay Area Dubstep bumps. One of my faves is OSC & DJG ft. BUDROS GALI - One Mile High. Check it out its totally worth it. In the end I got stuck in time a few times from too much of everything and my final memory was leaving the party and getting home and going oh shit I left my Rane at Mikey's. A great party for sure for sure!!

Sunday was Metal Masters at Shoreline with Judas Priest, Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath minus Ozzy plus DIO), Motorhead and Testament. Sunday afternoon filled with tons of metalheads ready to devil horn and drink anything their wallets could afford. My homie Cam's 16 year old brother came with and it was cool to show him what metal is all about. Excellent sets from Motorhead and the old yet dashing Lemmy and I admit I slept through most of Heaven and Hell and was up at attention the whole time for Judas Priest. Fucking killer time recommend to all.

OSC BBQ ON DUBSTEP FM PON THE PLAYBACK

WAR Dubstep Bootleg Series

The 12 inch white label WAR series is pretty fucking cool. Bootleg classic reggae tunes remixed as soon to be hard to find dance floor classics. Number 1 was a remix of Bob Marley's call to arms (of peace) War. Only heard on dub plate this one made it to the 500 only pressing of WAR001. the second side being a mash up of Max Romeo - One Step Forward and parts of Prince Jazzbo - Ital Corner. Each release is anonymous and has its lovers and haters. Some think its dumb to remix these songs others just love the new twist and sub bass. I have my copy played once and on the shelf because once I ripped the wax to wav, why ruin my grooves? WAR002 was 2 remixes of Legalize It by Peter Tosh done in a West Coast and East Coast flavor. The East Coast is my favorite being the stoney minimal version of the two. WAR003 was the first to do Dance hall tunes Never Scared and New Dimension by who I don't know. WAR004 is a remix of Rockers from the film Rockers and the second side Linval Dub. This one is my second favorite because Rockers is the best movie ever and it just comes down with the soulful rockers vibe with the low end sub bass. WAR005 is Marlon Asher's - Ganja Farmer and Althea & Donna - Uptown Rankin. Great tunes on the dancefloor but nothing too earth shattering. The series is rumored to have such diverse producers as 6 Blocc and Matty G and many othersand are all mastered by Transition. All I know is the dancers delight to the any of these you play out. Recently announced is WAR006 which I have been waiting for. Its a remix of Human Resources Rave classic Dominator and a second side with Danger Zone a remix of a reggae song I'm not sure of its artist. The Dominator remix is unreal and smooth and almost ambient with its pads and echo sounds of a slowed down old rave synths pumping out into the middle of space. Plenty of sub bass to be found here. I havent been this stoked over this tune since I heard the OG at my first rave in 1991. This takes the WAR series to a new place subbing rave for old reggae, just like the recent Lennie Dee - We Are IE remix by Caspa & Rusko and the DJG remix of Meat Beat Manifesto - Helter Skelter. Overall if you can find them (Ebay has a few of them) and keep them, the WAR series really brings something special to collecting and enjoying Dubstep records. I'm telling you the Dominator remix is fucking tits...... I wanna kiss myself!!

Monday Weekend Flashback

Sleep is golden. I slept away most of Friday night and Saturday day on Benedryl due to allergies. I missed some epic events Friday night.

Bassism Recordings night in SF went down. Tons of great stuff in the pipe from this label headed by DJ Tommy Lexxus who you can catch in Europe in a few weeks time on tour. A line up of champions for the night:

Bakir is one half of the Spit Bros. Eating BBQ many moons ago with Bakir he talked about the love of ethnic drums and odd rhythms in general seem to influence alot of his musical production. I had one track he gave me before I opened for Skream a few months back that I love. Big dance rave rhythm stuff who's name escapes me. It was one of his first solo efforts. Dubsworth the other half of the Spit Bros swears there is more to be heard from Bakir. The One being a local and international Grime pusher whos beats slap and let peeps know Grime Lives in the USA as well as the D&B sensation 2 Cents wit the Colonel MC and the KC Prophets which I have heard awesome things about. I fucking slept through the whole thing.

Saturday night I pushed myself out the door to go to a signing by one of my favorite comic book writers Mark Millar at the Isotope and then off to Surya Dub to hear Dave Q and DJ Rupture. Dave Q the Dubwar NYC Don played a techno heavy set full of sick beats. I had never really heard him play that dance floor and people where digging it big time. I heard he brought tons of Hessle Audio tunes I got weak and had to cut before Rupture to catch the all night bus home. Dave Q's set was a prime example of how surprises always abound when it comes to Dubstep. The DJ can go 4x4 or step or down low. Old Endorphins

Old school is term used tons in the modern music environment. Currently in the Dubstep Sublow world this mean pre 2006 4x4 based Garage or 2 step. Its hilarious here in 2008 we consider 2005 old school! Listening to old sets or newer set by the likes of Oneman or even N-Type and Walsh (when they hook up and do a 3 hour Sub Sunday on Rinse FM) with tons of old school, its an education. One of the records I finally acquired after a week of furious Google searching was SkyKap - Endorphins. I first heard it on a Sub Sunday set. The last time I was in London on my way to DMZ with Hatcha I asked him how hard he thought it would be to find it. In his signature Hatcha way of stating things he said "Lovely tune Sammy that would be very hard to find in fact that reminds me I gotta call Walshy and see if he can bring it for me tonight cause mines at home!" Considered to be maybe one of the first 2 Step tunes it came out in 1997. I was able to find a copy for 20 bucks shipped. Sick old 2 Step light jazzy airy piece of wax that just feels good with the female vocals that sing ...I'm feeeeeeeeeeeeeling High Baybay. Grime City once a year does an Old School Proto Dubstep night around October. The crew drags out the old 2 Step and Garage and goes to town. Local fixture and Electronic buyer at Amoeba SF, DJ Mike B (considered to be the Godfather of Dubstep in S.F.) threw down at the last one in 2007 and killed it with the classics. As time goes on I seem to be hearing the old and the new finally meeting on the dance floor. In the end this just mean more old records for me to collect......Le sigh....

Generation Bass: Radio 1 Mary Anne Hobbs

A little over 2 years ago Mary Anne Hobbs of Radio 1 Experimental presented to the world Dubstep Warz. This was how many around the world first heard Dubstep. She presented the cream of the scene at the time, artist like Mala, Hatcha, Vex'd and many more. I remember driving to Los Angles and hearing the playback on my ipod, blown away by what I heard. You talk to a lot of dubstep addicts and many state they had been waiting forwever for a mucial sound like this. Last night she presented Generation Bass and had the orignal artists pick the next group of Djs and producers. Check out the playback on the BBC player.
